The Flip Clock Wristwatch
This is the watch that uses the mechanical rotation of 23 tiny two-sided rotors to cleverly depict the illusion of a digital display. Drawing inspiration from the classic flip-disc displays employed by buses and trains, one side of each rotor has a number of Swarovski crystals that match the watchface; when activated by an electromagnetic field, the rotors flip 180º in less than 10 milliseconds, contrasting with the crystals to form easily recognized digital numerals.
Each passing second, minute, and hour is accompanied by a pleasant, ambient clattering that underscores its mechanical operation. Its 12-hour display can be changed to show the passing seconds or it can be turned “off” completely to just show all crystals, revealing the time only when a button is pressed.
